Anna Bradfield

America's Next Top Mom

Anna Bradfield-America's Next Top MomAnna Bradfield was just another beautiful woman on UPN's America's Next Top Model. Among all that perfection there was little to set her apart from the rest of the long legs, flowing hair and pouty lips. Granted, she was the only wife and mother among the 12 models, but that wasn't enough to make her really stand out. It was Bradfield's refusal to do a nude photo shoot that made America sit up and take notice of this curvaceous mother from LaGrange, Ga. And it was this same refusal that earned her the dubious distinction of being the first model kicked off of the show.

Not that Bradfield, a stunning blue-eyed brunette, is crying about her lot, she's very happy with the decision she made. "I was not going to compromise my integrity or hinder my relationship with my husband to pose nude," says Bradfield. "As soon as my friends and family saw the show they started calling my husband to say how proud they were and to give their support for my decision."

A Little Faith
In case you haven't seen it, America's Next Top Model is a reality show created by Tyra Banks and company. In it, 12 beautiful young women are put through their modeling paces and undergo a high-fashion boot camp. Like other reality shows, the cameras are always watching as the girls compete for the opportunity to be managed by IMG Models, appear on the cover of a Sephora catalogue and in a fashion spread in Jane magazine.

It's a rich prize to jeopardize for a moral ideal, but that's not the way Bradfield views it. Her family and faith played a large part in her refusal to pose nude. She believes that her nakedness should be reserved for her husband, and even though her son is young, she wanted him to be proud of her. "He only understands a little of what was going on, but he was definitely a part of my decision," says Bradfield.

Bradfield's faith had a large impact on her decision, as well. As a Christian, she attempts to follow after the teachings of Jesus Christ. This made her decision easy, she says. "I have to act according to what I know is right," says Bradfield. "I want to be a role model for other women and young girls."

Family Ties
Her son, Makarious, is Bradfield's joy. Though many people would think that having a family would be a hindrance to pursuing a career as a model, Bradfield believes that being a mother will actually be an advantage. "Being away from my family is going to make me much stronger," says Bradfield. "I want to become a model for my family. I need to take care of my son and support my family financially. And I have the passion and the look for it."

Bradfield admits to dreaming about being a model as a young girl, but the desire became stronger and stronger as she matured. A business major from Middle State College and Savannah State University, Bradfield has turned her sights onto a modeling career with a special intensity. "My plans haven't changed," says Bradfield firmly after she was booted from the show. "I still intend to be a top model. I want to bring curves back for American women."

A Realistic Beauty
At 5 feet 8 inches and 130 pounds, most Americans wouldn't consider Anna to be a plus-size model, but she isn't waif thin, and compared to other models, she could be considered downright husky. "Curves are coming back to modeling and I want to be a part of that," says Bradfield.

She stays in shape with a combination aerobics and strength training. "I work out every other day," says Bradfield. "I also try to stay away from sweets."

If you ask Bradfield about her greatest asset she won't mention her eyes or skin or even her hair. Those things were gifts from God, she believes. No, Bradfield credits her attitude as her best attribute. "My best asset is my positive personality," she says. "No matter what, I'm going to laugh. When it's a bad time, I'm just going to be positive. If I could describe myself in one word it would be positive."

Prime Time Surprises
That positive attitude took Bradfield through the harrowing first episode that included a surprise walk down the catwalk. According to the rules, each girl had to do her own hair and makeup and dress themselves in the right clothes in the right order – all in 30 minutes. Bradfield said her adrenaline was pumping. She'd had some experience on a catwalk, but not a lot and it showed. The judges said that all the girls "sucked." "I felt pretty good about it," said Bradfield later. "But like the editor from Jane magazine said, it needed a little work. I continue to practice."

The next surprise contained the infamous nude shot. "My husband and I had already talked about what I would do should that come up," says Bradfield. "He's very proud of me."

Back to the Future
Bradfield's life has changed since the show. She is back home now, taking care of her son and looking toward her future. Her days have been filled with phone calls and interviews from people wanting to know if she regretted her refusal to pose nude, the choice that lost her that modeling contract.

"I don't regret anything," says Bradfield, who says she enjoyed the whole experience. "I want them to remember me as the strong woman who didn't change her mind and didn't compromise her integrity."
