Kathy Kaehler
A Mom on a Mission for Fitness
Most moms are well versed in the art of multitasking, and Kathy Kaehler is no exception. Sure, she's a celebrity fitness expert whose clients include Julia Roberts, Drew Barrymore, Denise Richards, Jennifer Anniston and many others. And yes, she's the author of several well-received books on health and fitness, including her latest, Fit and Sexy for Life (Broadway Books, 2007). Then there's the DVD series, magazine articles and daily fitness classes she teaches in Los Angeles.
But Kaehler's main passion may be her kids: twin boys Cooper and Payton, 11, and son Walker, 7. In fact, the children inspired her latest project, Kathy Kaehler's Schoolhouse Workout, a program designed to get elementary school kids exercising in the classroom. Kaehler recently stopped moving long enough to talk about her life as a multitasking mom on a mission for fitness.
EA: How are the boys?
KK: They are so great. The twins are entertainers. They have both done national commercials and are currently appearing in the movie Fracture. They also have done ads for Target and Guess. They love to dance and sing. Walker is a true boy. I find him in what he calls his "base." In the backyard up a hill under some bushes are all his precious possessions. He plays incredible basketball and baseball. His imagination keeps my jaw dropping.

EA: Tell me about the Schoolhouse Workout.
KK: The workout is about one minute long. It would be demonstrated by me or my kids. A new one would be released each week and that way the parents or the kids themselves can do it while on the computer or watching TV.

EA: Tell me about your life as a mom these days. How do you balance it all?
KK: My life as a mom is busy. Getting everything in every day is tough. I keep lists so I know what has to be done that day. I start early. My first client is at 5:30 or 6 a.m. The kids are up at 6:45. We have breakfast on real dishes. My husband [Billy Koch, co-owner of Little Red Feather Racing, a horse racing syndicate] always wants to use paper plates but I feel breakfast should never be casual. It is the most important meal of the day, so I prepare it that way. I always have a plate of fresh cut fruit and juice, milk or yogurt drink. I have a lot of choosey eaters and drinkers! Once they are at the table, they tell me what they would like to have. I don't have that many choices, but enough to make them feel good. We eat a lot of eggs, whole wheat toast, oatmeal and cereal.
|
EA: Is it easier now that they're older?
KK: It is definitely easier now that my kids are older. They even like to prepare the eggs. But there is a lot more to get done that has a time element. When they were little, it didn't matter if they ate at 8 or 8:10 or 8:20. We didn't have to be out the door in an exact minute.
|
EA: What is your typical day like?
KK: After breakfast, we get on our bikes and ride to school. I set a policy in our
house that on school days we had to ride or walk to school. The more fit the kids
became, it allowed them to leave later because they could ride faster to school.
They love it and my husband and I love it, too. I believe my kids will always
remember this ritual. After that I have classes, clients, prepare a meal, organize
dinner, answer e-mails, write a column, make sure the dog and rabbit get fed.
Turn off lights, pick up laundry and get it in the washer. Fill or empty the dishwasher
and water my plants outside. Then the kids get home. Homework, snacks, play-dates,
bike rides, a couple of hoops and then its dinner, more homework, stories and
lights out.

EA: Tell me one memory of when you thought you were doing a great job as a mom.
KK: I have many, but my most memorable was just recently. My brother is a Lt. Col. in the Army. He has been to Iraq three times. Back home, thank God. But on Memorial Day, I took them to the VA cemetery and we walked around the graves and talked about our lives and the people's lives in the ground and really had some tender moments. I hope they remember that their mom exposed them to all kinds of things in their lives, and this just happened to be one that holds a special spot in my heart.

EA: What is your favorite part of being a mom?
KK: I love putting my kids to bed and waking them up. I love the way they smell. I love their warm bodies. I love to tickle them until they beg me to stop. I can't stop kissing them. I just love them so much.
