Encouraging Families to Adopt Pets

More and more families are adding pets to their homes, but less than 20 percent of these pets are adopted from shelters, says Mike Arms, president of Helen Woodward Animal Center in Santa Fe, Calif.

Diane Keaton is leading an international campaign to help boost that number. The actress and animal lover, who adopted her Newfoundland "Sweetie" from a shelter in Los Angeles, teamed up with the Helen Woodward Animal Center, The Iams Company and more than 1,300 shelters around the world for the sixth annual "Home 4 the Holidays" event.

"We have a simple and sincere focus: to save the lives of dogs and cats," says Keaton.

This adoption drive aimed to find lifelong homes for 300,000 orphan dogs and cats.

"There are so many wonderful pets in shelters waiting for loving homes," says Arms. "We work hard with all shelters to ensure we're making the right matches between families and pets, because we want these to be lifelong friendships."
